Aadhaar authentication failed at GST registration
Promoter Aadhaar OTP or biometric failed during GST registration. Fix name and mobile link first. Do not skip auth with a shortcut GSTIN.
The promoter is sitting on the plastic chair near the weighing scale, Aadhaar card on the knee, phone in the other hand. The GST form is open on the laptop. The OTP screen waits. The SMS does not match, or the site says authentication failed. Everyone in the shop has advice: try another number, try the son's Aadhaar, try after midnight. Most of that advice is how applications get rejected or worse, how the wrong person becomes "promoter" on a legal form.
GST registration wants the real promoter or authorised person authenticated. For many new applications that means Aadhaar OTP or, in some cases, biometric at a scheduled place. This is not a side game. If auth fails, the ARN does not magically approve. Do not complete the form in a cousin's Aadhaar because "his OTP comes." That is a false declaration.
Who must authenticate
On gst.gov.in the flow sits inside Services > Registration > New Registration. After Part A (PAN, mobile, email, state) you get a TRN. You log in with TRN and fill Part B: business details, promoters, authorised signatory, principal place, bank. Aadhaar authentication is tied to the persons you list — typically the primary authorised signatory and promoters as the form requires for your constitution (proprietorship, partnership, company).
A proprietorship is usually the proprietor. If the shop is in the father's name and the son fills the form with his Aadhaar, the file and the PAN will fight. Align PAN, Aadhaar, and who actually owns the business before you click.
For partners, each person the form marks for authentication must succeed. One partner's fail can hold the whole application.
Why OTP authentication fails
The mobile number on the GST form is not always the mobile linked to Aadhaar. OTP for Aadhaar authentication must reach the Aadhaar-linked number. If the proprietor changed the SIM years ago and never updated Aadhaar, the GST screen will fail even if GST OTP on another number works. Those are two different OTPs.
Name mismatch is the second classic. Aadhaar says "Ramesh Kumar Sharma." PAN says "Ramesh Sharma." GST form has "Ramesh K Sharma." Some mismatches pass, some fail. Do not keep inventing spellings. Correct Aadhaar/PAN through their official channels if the name is truly wrong, then return to GST. Do not upload a fake Aadhaar image.
Aadhaar number typed with a wrong digit fails. Space, leading zero, copy-paste from a photo — all of it fails. Type from the card, slowly, after the shop is quieter.
If the site itself errors ("technical failure"), wait and retry. Hammering the button twenty times can lock a temporary attempt. Note the time and the exact message.
When the portal asks for biometric
Some applicants are pushed to biometric authentication at a Facilitation Centre / appointed place instead of, or after, OTP. The form or SMS will say so. Book the appointment the way the portal or the linked site instructs. Carry original Aadhaar and the person who is named as promoter — not a helper with a photocopy.
If you skip the appointment, ARN stays incomplete. Paying an agent to "do biometric without going" is a story that ends badly. Be present.
Rules on who must do biometric versus OTP have been updated more than once. If your screen shows a new step you did not see in a YouTube video from last year, trust the screen. Check this month's official date only for published process notes on gst.gov.in, not for a forwarded PDF.
Mobile, email, and the GST login later
The mobile and email in Part A become your GSTN login life. Choose numbers you control. If Aadhaar OTP needs number A, and you want GST alerts on number B, understand both. You may need to update Aadhaar-linked mobile first at an official Aadhaar centre, then retry GST auth. That takes calendar time. Plan it. Do not start a second TRN every day.
After GSTIN is issued, changing authorised signatory is a separate amendment. Getting auth right at registration is cheaper than fixing a wrong person later.
What not to do on a failed night
Do not use a friend's Aadhaar. Do not tick "I am the promoter" for a person who only drives the delivery bike. Do not paste someone else's Aadhaar PDF in the document slot. Do not buy a "ready GST number" from a stranger. Those numbers, if they exist, are not your registration.
Do not keep the TRN password on a chit at the counter. The TRN login is the application.
If authentication finally succeeds, complete the rest of Part B the same week. A half-filled TRN expires. Check the TRN validity on the portal. If it expires, you start Part A again. That feels like punishment. It is just the system.
Photograph the success message. If the next page errors, you have proof auth passed and you can retry Part B without inventing a new identity.
After failure: a short checklist
- Confirm Aadhaar number and name with the physical card.
- Confirm which mobile is linked to Aadhaar (UIDAI official channels, not a shop rumour).
- Put that person as the correct promoter/signatory on the GST form.
- Retry OTP on einvoice-free gst.gov.in registration flow.
- If the form mandates biometric, book and attend.
- If still failed, use Services > User Services help/grievance with TRN/ARN and screenshots, or visit the GST Seva / jurisdictional help with originals.
A CA can sit with you. They cannot receive your Aadhaar OTP as if they were you, unless they are actually the authorised person — which they usually are not.
Keep the shop running. Failed auth is a registration block, not a reason to issue invoices under a neighbour's GSTIN.
FAQ
GST OTP on my shop number works, Aadhaar OTP does not. Why?
GST Part A OTP and Aadhaar OTP can go to different numbers. Aadhaar auth needs the mobile linked to Aadhaar. Update that link through official Aadhaar process, then retry.
Can the accountant complete Aadhaar auth using his number?
Only if he is the person whose Aadhaar is being authenticated — meaning he is listed as that promoter or signatory for real. An outside accountant should not authenticate as if he owns the shop.
The site sent me for biometric. Can I ignore it and wait for ARN approval?
No. If biometric is required for your application, skipping it leaves the file incomplete. Book the slot, go with originals, and keep the acknowledgement.
Name on Aadhaar and PAN differ by one letter. Will GST always fail?
Not always, but it is a common fail. Do not keep guessing spellings on the GST form. Align names on official PAN/Aadhaar records, then fill GST to match. Personal case: get local help.
GST Atka is not a GSTN office. File on gst.gov.in. Rules change. Do not evade tax. Personal case: get local help.
