GST portal login OTP is not coming on the mobile

Last date is tomorrow and the GST login OTP never arrives. Check the authorized signatory mobile, session, and resend wait.

The shop shutter is half down. You open gst.gov.in because GSTR-3B last date is tomorrow. Username goes in. Password goes in. The screen asks for OTP. You stare at the authorized signatory phone. Nothing. No SMS. The timer on the page keeps eating seconds.

You hit Resend. The portal says wait. You wait. Still empty. The helper already went home. You try the same login on the old laptop. Same OTP box. Same silence.

This is not a small delay if you file only at night. GSTN sessions time out. If you sit on the login page for too long, the OTP that finally arrives may belong to a session that is already dead. You type it anyway. Invalid. You request another. The phone stays quiet. Tomorrow morning the wholesaler will want payment and you will still be locked out of your own GSTIN.

A lot of small shops treat the login OTP as “network problem” and keep refreshing. Sometimes it is network. Often it is the wrong mobile, a DND setting, or the portal sending the code to the person who signed the registration years ago — not the person sitting at the counter tonight.

What this is doing to the shop

Without login you cannot open Returns Dashboard, cannot see whether GSTR-1 is filed, cannot pay through the cash ledger. Every failed OTP is another minute of the session clock.

If the last date is tomorrow, a missed login tonight is not “we will try after breakfast.” Portal load is heavier in the last two days of a period. SMS gateways also slow down.

There is a second hit: panic clicking. You create three browser tabs. Each tab requests OTP. GSTN may honour only the latest one. The first SMS, if it ever comes, is already useless. You think the system is broken. The system is doing what it always does — one live session, one live OTP.

Where to click on the GST portal

Start at the official site only: gst.gov.in. Do not follow random “GST login” ads. On the home page use Login. After username and password, the OTP screen is tied to the mobile and email stored against the user, usually the authorized signatory.

If you cannot log in at all, you still have a public path for some user services. From gst.gov.in go to Services, then User Services. Look for Forgot Username, Forgot Password, or e-contact details. Menu names shift after portal updates, so read the live labels. GSTN will send OTP only to registered mobile and registered email.

Once you do get in, open the profile area. Many taxpayers find My Profile or a similar block after login. Check the mobile number printed there. Compare it digit by digit with the phone in your hand. A single swapped digit from the day of registration is enough for a lifetime of “OTP not coming.”

For a change of mobile, the usual route after a successful login is Services → User Services, then the screen that lets you update e-contact details. That update itself needs OTP on the old number or email, which is why a dead SIM is a real trap. If the old number is gone, do not invent a workaround on a friend’s GSTIN. Stop and get local help.

Returns sit at Services → Returns → Returns Dashboard once login works. Do not wander into registration amendment while you are only trying to receive OTP.

What to try tonight

First, confirm you are using the authorized signatory mobile, not the shop Wi-Fi dongle number, not the accountant’s personal phone unless that person is mapped on the portal. Ask whoever did the original registration which number was entered. Look at the old GST REG-06 PDF if you still have it.

Second, wait the full resend interval. Do not hammer Resend every five seconds. Clear the SMS inbox so a new message is obvious. Check the spam or blocked list on the handset. Some Android phones quietly dump GSTN SMS. Turn off any SMS blocker app for ten minutes.

Third, try email OTP if the login screen offers it. Registered email is often an old Gmail that nobody opens. Open it on the laptop. Search for GSTN. The mail can land late, same as SMS.

Fourth, close every extra tab. Use one browser. Chrome or Edge, updated. Disable aggressive ad blockers on gst.gov.in for this session. After a failed OTP, wait, then start a fresh login. Do not paste an OTP from twenty minutes ago into a new session.

Fifth, check whether another person is also trying to log in with the same GSTIN. Owner on phone, nephew on laptop: pick one device.

Sixth, write down the exact error text. “Invalid OTP,” “session expired,” and “OTP not generated” are different problems. Screenshots help. Do not send your password in the screenshot.

If you get in, save the return often. Session timeout after login is a separate night-killer. Keep the phone next to the keyboard for the next OTP.

Mistakes that make the night longer

Using a “GST portal” link from a chat group. Fake pages harvest username and password, then never send a real OTP. Type gst.gov.in yourself.

Changing the SIM tonight without updating e-contact on the portal. The new SIM will not magically receive GSTN SMS.

Logging in as a new user when you already have a GSTIN user ID. Extra user IDs confuse OTP routing if you do not know which user you created.

Assuming the problem is which mobile network you use, and doing nothing about the registered number. Network can delay an SMS. It cannot fix a number that was never yours.

Filling GSTR-3B from last month’s photocopy while you wait for OTP. Login delay is not a reason to file guessed figures later.

When to stop and get local help

Stop if the registered mobile is a SIM you surrendered, a staff phone that left, or a number you cannot get OTP on even by email. Contact-detail recovery is not a night counter job.

Stop if the portal shows the user as locked or inactive after OTP failures. Further guesses can extend the lock.

Stop if you are not the authorized signatory and you only have the shop keys.

Stop if a deadline is tomorrow and you still cannot enter after two calm attempts. A local practitioner who already handles your GSTIN can reset the contact path faster than another hour of refresh.

Bring GSTIN, the user ID if you know it, the registered email, and a photo of the error. Do not share the password on WhatsApp. Ask them to use official gst.gov.in only.

FAQ

Why does GSTN send OTP to a number I do not use in the shop?

Because login OTP follows the mobile stored for that user, usually the authorized signatory from registration or the last e-contact update. Shop WhatsApp number and GSTN number are often different. Match the digits on the profile or the old registration PDF. Until that number can receive SMS or you complete a proper contact change, the counter phone stays silent.

How long should I wait before clicking Resend on the login OTP screen?

Wait for the timer the page shows. Extra clicks spawn extra codes. Only the latest OTP is valid. If the timer ends and nothing arrives, use Resend once, then wait again. After two or three patient cycles, try email rather than tapping Resend like a doorbell.

Can I finish GSTR-3B if OTP comes on email but not on SMS?

If the login page accepts email OTP and you enter the code from the registered mailbox, you can reach Returns Dashboard the same way as with SMS. Keep that mailbox open. Filing steps may ask for OTP again. Session timeout still applies. Email delay is common at night, so refresh the inbox, not twenty login tabs.

What if the authorized signatory is travelling and their phone is on roaming?

Roaming can delay or drop GSTN SMS. Ask them to check SMS and email, disable any SMS filter, and stay on one login session. If they cannot receive OTP at all, you need an e-contact update or local help, not a neighbour’s phone.

GST Atka is not a GSTN office. File on gst.gov.in. Rules change. Do not evade tax. Personal case: get local help.
